In a second-hand set of dimensions...
In an astral plane that was never meant to fly...
An enormous cosmic turtle, A'Tuin the Great, enters your view, as he slowly swims through space. On his back are four giant elephants. And on their backs... you rub your eyes because you can't believe what you see...
...a disc-shaped world, surrounded by water continuously flowing over its edge. This is Discworld, according to mathematicians with a probability of about 1 to 1,000,000.
Luckily, according to wizards chances of 1 to 1 million happen 9 times out of 10...
The Discworld (or just "the Disc") is the world where all the books in the Discworld series of author Terry Pratchett take place. Because it's probability is so small, just anything can become reality on the Disc. Of course there are wizards. And witches. And alchemists (often scattered all over the area). There are humans and trolls, dwarves and dryads.
And most importantly, there is magic. Magic which reduces the speed of light to a slow pace, so that dawn and dusk literally take hours... Magic which allows the wizards to keep their profession alive. Magic which allows for the weirdest humor in the universe. It's the magic that adds spice to the Discworld. Without magic, the Disc's inhabitants would just be a bunch of bandits, thieves, murderers and other criminals...
Actually with magic the Disc's inhabitants are still a bunch of bandits, thieves, murderers and other criminals but, well, that wouldn't sound very fancy, would it?
OK, here ends the introduction stuff. Let me put it this way: if you like humor, and if you like a little bit of fantasy,
you should go out and buy one of Pratchett's books. Or pick them up at the library if you want. As long as it isn't the
multidimensional Library of Unseen University...
Oh, by the way, although the Discworld books form a series, you can easily read them separately. Although, if you are going
to read a fair number of them, I do suggest you start with the first and work your way up.
Enjoy!

A MUD (Multi User Dungeon) is a virtual world created on a telnet server. Via a telnet client (or a special MUD client such as zMUD) you can enter such a world, walk around it, interact with other players from around the world, fight, make money, do quests, whatever. Go to the virtual Discworld, create a new character with a nice name and start exploring! It's even more fun than reading the books because the environment is completely interactive and filled with players with the weirdest sense of humor!
To leave this universe and go to Discworld, pick a telnet or MUD client or this Java telnet applet (or if that doesn't work this older one) and connect to discworld.atuin.net...

For more information about playing the MUD, such as maps, player mugshots, etc., please check the Maps and info section below...
In case you are interested, I can be found on the Discworld MUD under the character name of Berit*, who is a Fourth Level Wizard (if you wish you can check my stats). If you've read some of the books you'll know that this means that I'm further than Rincewind -who did not graduate at all- but still have quite some way to go to reach the dangerous Sixth, Seventh and who knows even Eighth Levels...)
* I took the name from a character from the books of David Eddings, not from any Scandinavian person. If you haven't
read a book of Eddings, do so. They're nearly as funny as the books of Pratchett!
I have removed the list of Discworld MUD players as I don't have time to keep it updated. If you want more information about
a certain Discworld MUD player, enter his or her name below and click the button:
The site will ask you for your Discworld MUD login, since you have to be logged into the MUD to finger others.

Yes, you are reading it correctly. There are three Webrings related to the Disc. Shame on those that started Webrings
without checking for existent ones first! Actually there are even five but two seem to have disappeared.
Anyway, here are the Webrings:
| Ring name | # of sites | Webring ID | homepage | list of sites |
| The Discworld Webring | 27 | discring | net.au | via Webring server |
| The Broken Drum | 16 | broken_drum | force9.net | via Webring server |
| Discworld Ring | 43 | discwrld | bigpond.com | via Webring server |
And here's the first one (as it was the largest at that time I decided to join it)...

There's also a Webring especially devoted to the MUD...:
